How Did I Get So “Moneystuck”?
I had a deep gnawing feeling in the pit of my stomach. I felt like less than a zero.
102,252 dollars below zero, to be exact.
That’s right, I was more than a hundred thousand dollars in debt.
It was my 30th birthday. I had just graduated with my MBA. I had packed up whatever belongings I could fit into my Honda Civic and was finally ready to escape the hustle of New York City and drive halfway across the country to Austin, TX, to move in with my boyfriend (now husband), Mike.
Despite feeling excited about my next chapter, I was gripped with fear: In six months, my student loans would come due.
Mike and I wanted to build a life and purchase a home together, and I felt stressed and ashamed that I would be the one preventing us from achieving our dream.
Over a thousand dollars in minimum payments every month for the next decade?
HELL NO!
I wanted to be free to buy a home and live my creative dreams of being an opera singer, not send all of my hard-earned money to MOHELA (the official servicer of federal student loans).
At that moment, I knew I could not follow the traditional 10-year+ student loan payoff plan. I had to dig my way out of debt as soon as possible.
